When to start
Many babies are ready for puréed solids around 6 months. Confirm timing with your child's pediatrician.
Introduce one food at a time
Offer a single-ingredient food for 3–5 days before moving to the next. Watch for signs of allergy: hives, vomiting, wheezing, swelling, or blood in stool. If any occur, stop the food and call your pediatrician or emergency services as appropriate.
How to prep purées
- Wash, peel (if needed), and chop produce into uniform pieces.
- Steam or roast until fork‑tender (no salt or sugar).
- Blend with safe water, breast milk, or formula to desired thickness.
- Serve with a small spoon; sit baby upright and supervise closely.
Storage
- Fridge: Up to 48 hours.
- Freezer: Up to 3 months in 1–2 oz portions.
- Thaw overnight in the fridge or reheat from frozen until steaming; cool and stir well before serving.
Choking vs. allergy
Purées should be smooth or very soft. Avoid chunks and hard foods. Always supervise and avoid distractions during feeding.
